The Computer system
- Leif, Anders B and Anders N are responsible for the computer system. Locally stored manuals for many programs and more information are available on the computer page. Print commands
Here is info about print commands for different operating systems.
xemacs General editor. In particular it has special functionality for handlig LaTeX documents.
latex Compile a Latex document to a DVI file. Note that the department has local classes for reports, slides, exams, etc. Always use the schoolbook package for nicer and correct fonts. Two very useful packages are amsmath (for mathematical expressions) and psfrag (for replacing text in postscript figures).
dvips Convert a DVI file to postscript. Sometimes you need to invoke this manually to get the correct paper size (using the -t <papertype> option).
bibtex Compile the bibliography for a Latex document.
gv View postscript files. Can also read most PDF files.
booklet Shrink and convert a postscript document into booklet format, convenient for documents up to about 40 pages. Use e.g. booklet file.ps | lpr
psnup Puts multiple pages of a Postscript file onto each physical sheet of paper.
dvipdf Convert a .dvi file to .pdf
ps2pdf Convert a postscript file to PDF.
acroread View PDF files.
jpeg2ps Convert a JPEG image to postscript, without increasing the size of the file.
quota Type quota -v to display disk usage and limits.
groups Print the groups you belong to. Ask Leif when you need to be added to more groups (e.g. if you're teaching a certain course). More tips and tricks can be found here.
sperry-01, sperry-02, sperry-03 File server, mail server, etc.
gronwall The Windows computer located in the seminar room.
maxwell Web server. You can also use maxwell as compute server or to login from outside.
The home directories are backed up daily. Ask Leif or Anders B if you need to restore some files. Only place files that really need backup in your home directory (/home/username/)! Place all other files (downloaded documents, programs, mp3's, etc.) on your local hard drive (/work/username/). Leif will set up this directory for you if it doesn't exist. It can sometimes be useful to "borrow" material from people who have left the department. Have a look under /work/oldusers/
You can access your mail from outside the department using the Webmail at https://webmail.lu.se.
